Artist
Ken Matsuzaki
Japan
Mashiko tradition, contemporary vision.
He carries forward the Mashiko tradition while pushing it into contemporary territory.
Ken Matsuzaki works in Mashiko, the pottery village that Shoji Hamada made famous. He's deeply rooted in Mashiko traditions—wood firing, ash glazes, functional forms—but his work is distinctly contemporary: bolder, larger, more experimental than traditional Mashiko ware. He fires multiple wood kilns, each producing different effects, and has become one of Japan's most respected contemporary potters.
How do you honor tradition while making it your own?
