Phil Rogers

Wales

Welsh ash and fire. Local materials, global tradition.

He made glazes from the ash of Welsh trees and fired in wood kilns he built himself.

Phil Rogers was deeply committed to local materials and wood firing. From his pottery in rural Wales, he created functional stoneware using glazes made from ash collected from local trees. He built and rebuilt wood kilns, chasing the natural effects of ash landing on pots during firing. He was also a prolific writer, sharing knowledge through books on ash glazes and salt glazing.
