Warren MacKenzie

USA

The humble potter. Thousands of pots, ordinary prices.

He studied with Leach and Hamada, became one of America's most respected potters—and kept his prices low so ordinary people could buy.

Warren MacKenzie studied with Bernard Leach, apprenticed with Hamada. He settled in Minnesota and spent six decades making functional stoneware. Even as his reputation grew, he kept prices accessible. A MacKenzie bowl might cost what you'd pay for a department store dish. 'I make pots for people to use,' he said. He made hundreds of thousands, scattered across the country in ordinary kitchens.
What would it mean to keep your work accessible?
